Lab tests

One of our lecturers today said that DNA tests can be used to establish paternity, but they cannot be used to prove charges of fornication. Claims of lineage accept a certain degree of doubt, and the sunnah shows us several means for doing so; while punishments are avoided in the face of doubts or dubious evidence, and the means for proving crimes are limited.

The instructor favors the opinion that paternity is established even when impregnation was itself unlawful.

I wonder if he would consider laboratory testing a valid means for ensuring children born out of wedlock are supported by whichever male is determined to be the father.
